From 90s Brown to Fresh & Green: A Kitchen Reimagined

I don’t always get the chance to share the behind‑the‑scenes of the spaces I design, so this project feels especially fun to talk about. This young family had just purchased their starter home—a sweet, cozy place with a kitchen and breakfast nook full of potential, but also full of design choices that hadn’t been touched in decades. It simply wasn’t working for how they lived. They brought me in to help them reimagine the space in a way that honored their budget while still delivering a design that felt fresh, functional, and full of personality. We’re all used to seeing dramatic online makeovers of sprawling kitchens with sky‑high budgets, but most people don’t live in 5,000‑square‑foot homes. Thoughtful, attainable design for real families is where I love to work—and small spaces are truly my specialty.

Making Smart Changes That Matter

To keep costs down, the sink and range stayed in their original locations. But we did make one impactful architectural change: closing off an opening near the breakfast nook. That doorway led to a room the family plans to use as an office, and because that room already had a second entrance, sealing this one gave us a full, uninterrupted wall to work with. That single adjustment opened up so many possibilities for layout and storage. Once the clients shared their inspiration images, the design direction became clear and we got to work.

A Fresh, Functional Kitchen

The updated plan makes the most of the compact footprint. We refreshed the cabinetry, added marble countertops, and chose a mix of unlacquered brass knobs and pulls—beautiful now, and even better as they patina over time. Small kitchens can absolutely have style, and this one now feels intentional, warm, and timeless.

A Breakfast Nook Built for Gathering

The original built‑in bench wasn’t maximizing the space, so we replaced it with a new bench that spans the entire back wall, complete with storage on both sides. This allowed room for a longer table that comfortably seats six to eight—perfect for family meals or hosting friends. Tall cabinetry adds even more storage for tableware, and the sconces bring in soft, inviting light and a lovely decorative touch.

A Cozy, Updated Heart of the Home

New flooring, updated lighting, and a charming Dutch door complete the transformation. The result is a kitchen that feels beautiful, functional, and ready to serve as the cozy center of this family’s home for years to come. I’d love to hear what you think—what details stand out to you? Is there anything you might have done differently? Your thoughts always inspire great conversations.
